Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2021

Posted on September 30th, 2021

Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2021 has arrived!

DVAM was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to unite the individuals and organizations working to address domestic violence issues. Over 30 years later, what began as a single day of unity has become a month-long, nationwide movement whose mission is to raise awareness around violence and to prevent its spread.

Domestic Violence Awareness month gives SDVSAS the opportunity every year to come together with the Skagit community and increase awareness around ways domestic violence can be prevented and how victims can be supported. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SDVSAS has seen an increased need for interpersonal violence services and the importance of community and connection for victims of violence.

This year’s DVAM theme is: The Power of Connection.

To facilitate the power of connection in our community, participate in the DVAM mission, and to support survivors in Skagit, SDVSAS is proud to host four free, one-hour, weekly virtual workshops during October to explore and teach different topics around connection.

  • Week 1 Theme: Connecting with Ourselves
    • Hosted virtually on October 6th from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
    • This workshop will cover how to make a self-care plan and explore topics around trauma and coping.

Purple Thursday is a national day of action each October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

It is an opportunity to increase awareness about domestic violence and an easy way for people to show their commitment to promoting healthy relationships. Please join us on October 21st! Wear purple, be a voice, and start a conversation about domestic violence.

On the 21st, dig through your closet, snag something purple and snap a selfie! Post your pictures on Facebook, “check in” or “tag” Skagit DVSAS, and use #purplethursday to raise awareness.
