An Interview with a Young Skagit County Philanthropist

Posted on September 18th, 2018

We had an extra special visit this past month from Maya Winkes, Girl Scout extraordinaire, who donated all proceeds from this year’s cookie sales to Skagit DVSAS. Maya stopped by the office to make her contribution and I managed to snag an interview with this up and coming force for good. This young woman is going places, so watch her dust! Check out our conversation below!

Name: Maya Winkes
Age: 9
Grade: 4th

What are your other interests, apart from philanthropy and Girl Scouts?
I like taking care of children, tutoring, and educational games.

What made you choose our agency to donate your cookie sale proceeds to?
Because I believe in the work that you do and I want to help.

Were there any challenges you had to overcome to make this happen?
We did have some cookies that were stolen and had to be replaced. We paid for them. It can be dangerous so you should have an adult to supervise.

What would you like your community to know about fundraising and Skagit DVSAS?
It’s important to give and to try because they don’t have a lot of money and need the extra support. Everyone should try to donate and if you don’t have money, you can still do good deeds.

Who do you think are your biggest supporters?
My parents, my brother, Luke, and my best friend, Kendal.

Who is your biggest role model and why?
Katherine Johnson and all my teachers. Because they inspire me and give me new ideas.

What are your goals for your future?
I would like to either be a teacher or a human computer for NASA.

Do you hope your friends will follow in your footsteps and practice good deeds on their own?
Yes, I hope so, because I tried to set a good example for them.

Do you plan to do more?
Definitely, yes

What advice would you give to young people who want to get involved in causes, like you just did?
Don’t be stingy and selfish, just do it!!

You heard Maya, just do it! Thank you SO much, Maya, for working so hard on our behalf and thinking of us with your donation. We value and appreciate you and your efforts!
