Community in Action

Posted on September 18th, 2018

Skagit DVSAS proudly participated in the Project Homeless Connect (PHC) event at Skagit Valley College on August 24th. PHC’s mission is to provide a single location where Health and Social Service Providers may collaborate to serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness or that are at-risk of becoming homeless with comprehensive, holistic, and immediate services. The event was open to all families and individuals looking to overcome their barriers to stable housing, but services were available to all, not just those experiencing homelessness.

During our time there, we distributed hygiene kits, engaged the kiddos with some fun activities, and spoke to individuals about the services that we provide. It was wonderful to have Lorena Cortes — our Immigrant Victim Coordinator, on-hand, as roughly half of our participants were Spanish-speaking. Without her, we wouldn’t have been able to communicate or have outreach with a big part of our community. It was also a great opportunity to meet and collaborate with other providers and learn about the services they offer. This type of systems coordination improves resources available in the community for those who need it most. Thanks to the volunteers who came out to help with this event and to Skagit Valley College for hosting!
